The Global South Maritime Organization (GSMO) was established to unify and amplify the maritime interests of Global South nations on the world stage. Our mission is to champion sustainable ocean governance, equitable economic growth, and resilient maritime ecosystems uniquely tailored to the challenges and opportunities of the Global South.
Our Role as the Global South Voice
GSMO serves as the principal regional platform ensuring that Global South maritime priorities are cohesively represented in international maritime policy discussions, including at the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and other global forums. We do not replace or challenge these bodies but complement and strengthen them by advocating for collective Global South solutions that reflect our diverse contexts and development needs.
Strategic Approach
To achieve our mission, GSMO pursues:
Inclusive governance driven by member states and regional hubs
Data-driven policy advocacy and research that centers Global South realities
Capacity building and knowledge sharing across governments, industry, and communities
Partnerships that leverage international cooperation while preserving our autonomous voice
Leadership & Commitment
Governed by a multi-tiered structure emphasizing transparency, equity, and innovation, GSMO’s Secretariat, member states, and advisory councils actively engage in shaping effective maritime safety, climate resilience, trade facilitation, and ocean sustainability initiatives that drive regional growth and environmental stewardship.
