The Global South Maritime Organization’s (GSMO) Institutional Mandate distinctly defines our scope, responsibilities, and authority as the foremost regional platform representing the collective maritime interests of Global South nations. This mandate reflects our unique position as an autonomous yet cooperative organization complementing global bodies like the International Maritime Organization (IMO) without replacing or competing focused squarely on advancing sustainable maritime development tailored to the complex socioeconomic and geopolitical realities of our member states.

Under this mandate, GSMO is empowered to:

  • Policy Advocacy: Craft and coordinate evidence-based maritime policies that reflect Global South priorities and drive harmonized regional and international standards in safety, security, environmental protection, and trade facilitation.
  • Capacity Enhancement: Lead regional capacity building initiatives through expert training, technical assistance, and knowledge exchange programs to bolster member states’ maritime governance capabilities.
  • Development Programs: Facilitate and catalyze sustainable blue economy projects that balance environmental stewardship and economic growth, promoting long-term resilience for Global South maritime communities.
