At GSMO, South–South Knowledge Exchange is more than a principle, it’s our core strategy for building collective maritime capacity and catalyzing innovation across the region. Through tailored forums, peer-to-peer learning events, technical workshops, and digital collaboration platforms, we enable member states to share hands-on solutions, develop joint expertise, and strengthen regional solidarity.

Key Initiatives

  • Regional Knowledge Forums: GSMO convenes forums where members showcase successful practices in maritime security, climate mitigation, digitization, and port operations. These forums welcome technical delegations, government stakeholders, port authorities, and innovators to actively exchange insights.
  • Joint Technical Workshops: Our collaborative workshops tackle evolving maritime challenges, from implementing the latest IMO standards to improving emergency response or advancing blue economy strategies.
  • Peer Learning Networks: GSMO maintains networks for port managers, fisheries experts, marine engineers, and maritime regulators, fostering ongoing dialogue and capacity development through webinars, twinning programs, and online communities of practice.

Impact on Members

By bringing together practitioners and decision-makers, GSMO helps members accelerate adoption of best practices, leapfrog development hurdles, and avoid repetitive mistakes. Inter-governmental “twinning” and exchange schemes empower states with direct access to field-tested solutions and proven partners for piloting new projects.

All lessons learned, case studies, and workshop outcomes are codified and made available through GSMO’s open-access knowledge portal, deepening regional pools of expertise, fostering innovation, and driving more durable project results.
