Environmental Stewardship & Blue Economy

Balancing Economic Growth with Ocean Conservation

The Global South Maritime Organization (GSMO) champions sustainable development of the seas, ensuring that economic benefits from maritime activities go hand-in-hand with the preservation of marine ecosystems. Our initiatives promote ecosystem protection, reduction of marine pollution, sustainable fisheries, and the expansion of renewable marine energy supporting resilient, inclusive blue economies across our member states.

Ecosystem Preservation and Pollution Reduction

GSMO actively coordinates efforts to protect vulnerable marine habitats such as coral reefs, mangroves, and fisheries nurseries. Through partnerships aligned with IMO conventions like MARPOL and international programs like GESAMP, we promote best practices in pollution control, ballast water management, and marine litter reduction. Our targeted projects support member states in mitigating shipping emissions, controlling oil spills, and addressing plastic waste to safeguard marine biodiversity.

Sustainable Fisheries and Aquaculture

We support innovations and regulatory reforms to foster sustainable fisheries that protect fish stocks while securing livelihoods dependent on the ocean. GSMO encourages science-based fisheries management, anti-IUU fishing measures, and aquaculture development that respects ecosystem boundaries paving the way for food security and economic resilience.

Renewable Marine Energy and Blue Economy Innovation

Recognizing the transformative potential of marine renewable energy, GSMO accelerates adoption of offshore wind, tidal, and wave energy technologies. We facilitate Blue Economy Accelerator programs that incubate innovative startups, engage SMEs, and organize ocean tech showcases linking investment, technology transfer, and policy support for sustainable ocean industries.

Join GSMO’s Environmental Stewardship and Blue Economy initiatives to build resilient seas, thriving coastal communities, and a sustainable future for the Global South.
