The Global South Maritime Organization (GSMO) supports member states in designing and developing maritime infrastructure that can withstand the growing impacts of climate change. GSMO promotes a hybrid approach combining engineered “grey” infrastructure such as elevated structures, reinforced sea walls, and robust drainage systems with “green” nature-based solutions like mangrove restoration, living shorelines, and wetland conservation. This balanced strategy enhances resilience, reduces maintenance costs, and provides co-benefits including biodiversity preservation, water quality improvement, and carbon sequestration.

Our programs emphasize comprehensive risk assessments that evaluate climate hazards, vulnerability of port assets, and operational dependencies.
