Climate-Resilient Infrastructure

Designing Maritime Infrastructure for a Changing Climate

The Global South Maritime Organization (GSMO) supports member states in designing and developing maritime infrastructure that can withstand the growing impacts of climate change. Our programs focus on integrating advanced engineering principles and nature-based solutions to build coastal defenses, flood protection systems, and adaptive port facilities that safeguard vulnerable communities and vital economic assets against rising sea levels, extreme weather events, and other climate risks.

Innovative Engineering and Nature-Based Solutions

GSMO promotes a hybrid approach combining engineered “grey” infrastructure such as elevated structures, reinforced sea walls, and robust drainage systems with “green” nature-based solutions like mangrove restoration, living shorelines, and wetland conservation. This balanced strategy enhances resilience, reduces maintenance costs, and provides co-benefits including biodiversity preservation, water quality improvement, and carbon sequestration.

Integrated Risk Assessment and Adaptive Planning

Our programs emphasize comprehensive risk assessments that evaluate climate hazards, vulnerability of port assets, and operational dependencies. GSMO assists members in developing adaptive planning frameworks that incorporate iterative decision-making, monitoring, and feedback to adjust infrastructure investments over time. This approach optimizes resource allocation and ensures long-term functionality under uncertain future climate scenarios.

Strengthening Supply Chain Resilience

Recognizing that ports operate within broader logistics and transportation networks, GSMO advocates for the integration of port climate resilience measures with hinterland infrastructure adaptations. We facilitate collaboration among stakeholders across sectors to enhance the durability and agility of supply chains, ensuring continuity of maritime trade even during severe disruptions.

Let GSMO guide your transition to climate-resilient maritime infrastructure that protects people, preserves ecosystems, and supports sustainable development.
