Dispute Mediation Services

Expert Mediation for Peaceful Maritime Conflict Resolution

The Global South Maritime Organization (GSMO) offers specialized mediation and advisory services to help member states peacefully resolve disputes related to maritime boundaries, resource access, and navigational rights. Our approach is grounded in international legal frameworks, particularly the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), which provides a versatile, globally recognized basis for settling maritime conflicts.

Proven UNCLOS Arbitration and Litigation Frameworks

GSMO facilitates dialogue and multi-stakeholder negotiations underpinned by the dispute resolution mechanisms enshrined in UNCLOS—most notably, arbitration and adjudication through the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS). Parties can choose among several procedures including ITLOS, the International Court of Justice (ICJ), or ad hoc arbitral tribunals constituted under Annexes VII and VIII of UNCLOS. These mechanisms ensure impartial, binding decisions that respect sovereign rights while promoting cooperative resource management.

Conflict Prevention through Transparency and Cooperation

Beyond dispute settlement, GSMO actively supports conflict prevention by encouraging transparency initiatives, early warning systems, and confidence-building measures. Exemplifying this approach is the Djibouti Code of Conduct (DCoC), a successful regional mechanism combatting piracy and illicit trafficking in the Western Indian Ocean. GSMO promotes replication of such cooperative security frameworks across the Global South to reduce tensions and foster lasting maritime peace.
